Agriculture is the backbone of rural Pakistan, yet climate change, declining soil fertility, and unsustainable farming practices are placing growing pressure on food security and rural livelihoods. Women play a major role in agricultural labour, but their contributions often remain invisible, undervalued, and excluded from decision-making and market opportunities.
At Salika Organic Farms, ELY Foundation is promoting women-led sustainable and regenerative agriculture through climate-smart farming practices including vermicomposting, green manuring, beneficial bacteria cultures, and chemical-free cultivation. The farm’s key value chains include citrus (kinnow and lemon), garlic, wheat, barley, sesame, moringa, fruits, and herbs.
ELY is helping rural women transition from hidden labourers to recognised entrepreneurs by training them in value addition, food processing, and climate-resilient agriculture. Women are actively engaged in sowing, harvesting, grading citrus, garlic peeling, pickling, drying, and preparing jams, squashes, marmalades, candied peel, and herbal products.
So far, more than 20 women from Chak Baqaya have been trained in sustainable agriculture and processing of over 14 varieties of fruits, vegetables, and herbs including garlic, green chillies, moringa, ginger, amla, mango, kinnow, and winter vegetables.
Through these initiatives, ELY Foundation is building a women-led model of regenerative agriculture that strengthens rural livelihoods, improves food systems, and promotes climate resilience.
